Setup error when you reinstall Exchange Server

Many of you administrators must have come across setup error whenever you reinstall Microsoft Exchange Server. If you reinstall an Exchange Server on the same computer, then whole setup just freezes up and stops responding when it tries to create SRS known as Site Replication Service. The following error message appears in the Setup.log file:

“Error code 0XC1030B0C (2828): The distinguished name already exists. Try the operation again. If the error recurs, try stopping the directory service and the Administrator program and then restarting them.”

Causes

Following are the possible reasons for this setup error:

  • SRSDATA folder might not been deleted when Exchange Server is removed. When the Exchange Setup program reruns on the computer, it tries to replicate the naming context. If the context already exists in the SRSDATA folder, errors crop up.
  • There might be previous unsuccessful installations or not completely removed.
  • Exchange 2000 computer appears in the directory on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer. If there is an Exchange 2000 computer object in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory, delete it.

If you delete the Exchange 2000 computer from the Exchange Server 5.5 directory, the unsuccessful installation may still not be completely removed if the Exchange Server 5.5 computer cannot run a Knowledge Consistency Check (KCC).

  • Exchange 2000 computer is a replication partner of the Exchange Server 5.5 computer. If there is no Exchange 2000 computer object in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory but the installation is still unsuccessful, verify that the Exchange 2000 computer is not a replication partner of the Exchange Server 5.5 computer.

Resolutions

One of the below mentioned methods needs to be followed for resolving this issue:

  1. Manually remove the SRSDATA folder before you reinstall Exchange Server Setup.
  2. Reinstall Exchange Server to a different folder than was used for the first installation.
  3. Run KCC (Knowledge Consistency Check).
  4. Use Exchange Recovery Software.

Now after assuring that all unsuccessful installations of Exchange 2000 has been removed, next is to rename the Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file, and then reinstall Exchange 2000.

This way you are able to surpass the setup error and would reinstall the Exchange Server without any hassle.

Use Exchange Database repair tool if EDB files gets damaged and you won’t access data stored in the users’ mailboxes anymore. The software saves mailboxes of .EDB file to working .PST file which can be accessed with MS Outlook
